James Albert Taylor was born in River Hebert on October 10, 1919, and enlisted at Amherst on September 18, 1939, as the Second World War opened. He served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, R.C.I.C., the regiment raised here in Cumberland County, the same battalion that landed at Juno Beach on D-Day.
Six days after those landings, on June 12, 1944, he was killed in action in Normandy. He was 24 years old. He left behind his wife, Audrey Georgina Taylor, of River Hebert.
Lance Corporal Taylor is buried at Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France, grave VI. H. 12. He is commemorated on page 458 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance in Ottawa.
He is one of the Cumberland County men whose name we carry forward. If your family keeps a photograph or a letter from him, we would be glad to hear from you.
