Reg and Saide Harder, a retired couple from Manigotagan, Manitoba, had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary when a devastating generator fire destroyed their lake home on Boxing Day in 2025. To make matters worse, due to nearby smouldering wildfires, they had not yet been able to secure home insurance for a newly built addition, leaving them with absolutely nothing.
The trauma of the event was immense—Saide even suffered a heart attack shortly after escaping the blaze. However, what could have been an utterly bleak crisis was transformed by the immediate, overwhelming response of their community.
Locals rushed to their aid, quickly arranging a free motel room for the couple on the night of the fire, and a local restaurant provided them with shelter and warmth the following morning. Their daughter launched a fundraiser that rapidly surpassed $56,000 to help them secure a small apartment while they begin to rebuild.
For a couple who had spent their entire lives helping others—having previously lost their business and faced a massive flood years prior—the community’s rally was a profound return of the unconditional love Reg and Saide had always shown to their neighbors.
