A New Year’s Wish at Southlake Health
Arnold and Helen McNeil have been married for 74 years, but due to separate health concerns, the couple had been forced to live apart while receiving care.
As the 2025 holiday season approached, Arnold had one simple wish: to see his wife to ring in the New Year together. However, their plans were suddenly upended when Helen suffered a spinal fracture and was rushed to the emergency department at Southlake Health. Around the exact same time, Arnold’s own health took a severe turn; he developed an infection, became increasingly confused, and was transported to the very same hospital.
What could have been a lonely and terrifying crisis for the couple was transformed by the kindness of the hospital’s nursing staff. When the medical team learned of Arnold’s New Year’s wish, they immediately coordinated a plan to help. The nurses arranged for Arnold and Helen’s twin hospital beds to be placed side-by-side right there in the emergency department.
Instead of spending the last day of 2025 alone in medical distress, the couple was able to hold hands and comfort each other—proving that even after seven decades, their connection is stronger than any hardship they face.
