RCMP Nova Scotia Reminds Drivers: In snow and slush ease the rush. January 20, 2026, Dartmouth Nova Scotia…

With winter well underway and more snow, slush, and ice expected in the weeks ahead, the Nova Scotia is reminding drivers to ease the rush: Slow down, plan extra time and drive to conditions.

“By this point in the season, many drivers feel more confident behind the wheel,” said Insp. Jeff Mitchell, Officer in Charge, RCMP Traffic Services. “But winter conditions haven’t changed, and neither have the risks. Snow and slush can hide ice, reduce traction and increase stopping distances. When winter brings snow and slush, ease the rush: Slow down, leave space and take extra time.”

The Nova Scotia RCMP is encouraging drivers to reset their winter driving habits and remember that posted speed limits are based on ideal conditions, not snow, slush or ice-covered roads.

Drivers are reminded to:

  • Ease the rush: Reduce speed and increase following distance.
  • Clear all snow and slush from windows, mirrors, lights and the roof before driving.
  • Check the forecast and delay non‑essential travel during storms or poor visibility.
  • Carry emergency supplies and pack for possible delays. If you’re travelling with a pet, make sure you pack for them.
  • Stay with your vehicle if you become stranded and ensure it’s visible to others.

“Rushing on winter roads puts everyone at risk, including pedestrians, emergency responders and road crews,” says Insp. Mitchell. “Arriving late is always better than not arriving at all.”

RCMP Nova Scotia will continue sharing winter driving safety reminders throughout the remainder of the season, especially before and during stormy conditions.

For more winter driving tips, follow RCMP Nova Scotia on social media.
