Anyone who was around in the 1980s is likely to remember the cult-classic hockey film “Youngblood.” Now, the film is set to get a remake for a new generation starring some Maritime talent.
Alexandra McDonald grew up playing hockey on Prince Edward Island. She started playing the sport at age five, with some encouragement from her father.
“He gave me one option — hockey,” said McDonald in an interview with Your Morning Atlantic’s Crystal Garrett.
McDonald plays the role of Jessie Chadwick, the daughter of the protagonist team’s coach and a promising goalie. She eventually forms a romantic connection with the movie’s protagonist, Dean Youngblood.
While the film may share a title with the 1986 cult classic, McDonald says this movie takes a different approach.
“The original is about Rob Lowe, and he’s trying to toughen up, and it kind of flips that entirely. It’s about learning to have restraint in the sport and discipline in a different way to hold yourself back rather than to fight all the time,” she said.
McDonald says she feels like the role was made for her.
“When it came in, there was just this overwhelming feeling of like, ‘Oh this is going to be mine, I’m going to have to work hard for it, but it’s going to be mine,’” she said.
“I just hope for my character I inspire young girls to stay with the sport, and it really shaped who I am as a person, so I just hope young girls get inspired by that.”
