Warning graphic violence and sexual assault.

Jessie Vandewiel bravely asked a Nova Scotia court to lift a publication ban on her name to share the harrowing story of survival following a brutal weekend of violence. During a sentencing hearing in an Amherst courtroom, she detailed the horrific abuse she endured at the hands of her former partner and the father of her child, twenty-eight-year-old Noah Daniel Jamieson of North Wallace. Vandewiel described herself as a survivor of a horrific crime, emphasizing to the court that she is a person and a mother, not merely a piece of evidence.
The violent events began outside Jamieson’s trailer after he became enraged by reading a text message on Vandewiel’s phone. Jamieson repeatedly slammed her head into her car in a vicious and unprovoked attack. Following this severe physical assault, he proceeded to rape her inside the vehicle. Compounding the severe trauma of the situation, their young son was inside the trailer while the assault and sexual violence took place just outside.
.
Although Jamieson eventually calmed down and apologized after the initial attack, the abuse did not stop there. Over the course of the weekend, Vandewiel suffered two additional assaults, enduring a sustained period of terror. In her victim impact statement, she recalled every instance where she was kicked, bitten, and choked by her abuser. She expressed to the court that a part of her soul died in that trailer, highlighting the profound psychological and physical toll of the ordeal.
.
In her powerful address to the court, Vandewiel spoke about the lasting impacts of the trauma on her daily life. She described living in a constant state of hypervigilance and anxiety, haunted by nightmares whenever she tries to sleep. While she expressed immense relief that she was able to remove her son from the situation and provide him with a violence-free home, she questioned the heavy cost she had to pay to achieve that safety. She condemned Jamieson’s choice to mutilate and degrade her as a means to exert power and control.
.
Justice Jeffrey Hunt of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court accepted a joint recommendation from the Crown and defense lawyers, sentencing Jamieson to six years in prison. However, with enhanced credit for the time he had already spent in custody since his arrest, his remaining sentence going forward is approximately three years. Jamieson was also designated as a long-term offender, meaning he will face a lengthy period of strict supervision at a halfway house upon his release, with any violations potentially resulting in a return to prison.
.
During the sentencing, Justice Hunt strongly condemned Jamieson’s actions, noting that he assaulted, degraded, and endangered his victim. The judge pointed out that Jamieson had the opportunity to build a life and a family but chose instead to throw it all away. The court also noted Jamieson’s extensive criminal history, which includes fifteen prior convictions featuring a previous assault on Vandewiel and an arson conviction for setting fire to his mother’s home.
