Excessive speed leads to impaired operation arrest March 4, 2026, Brookfield, Nova Scotia…

A traffic stop conducted by RCMP Northwest Traffic Services for excessive speed resulted in a person arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

On February 28 at approximately 9:55 p.m., an RCMP Northwest Traffic Services officer was conducting proactive patrols on Hwy. 102 near Brookfield when they observed an SUV travelling at speeds that appeared to be significantly over the posted speed limit of 110km/h.

Radar confirmed that the brown Volkswagen Tiguan was travelling at approximately 199km/h.

The officer safely conducted a traffic stop at a highway off-ramp. During the traffic stop, the officer noted that the driver and only occupant showed signs of impairment by alcohol. The driver, a 46-year-old man from Arisaig, provided a roadside breath sample into an approved screening device (ASD), which resulted in a “fail.”

He was arrested and transported to the Colchester County District RCMP Detachment in Bible Hill. He provided breath samples that registered 130mg% and 120mg%.

The man will face charges for impaired operation and was released pending a future court appearance scheduled in April. He was also issued a summary offence ticket under the provincial Motor Vehicle Act for stunting, which comes with a fine of $2422.50.

RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment Traffic Unit reports increase in traffic stops and enforcement activity February 25, 2026, Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia…

The RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment (HRD) Traffic Unit has recorded a steady increase in traffic stops and enforcement activity over the past several months, with the most significant rise occurring in January and February.

Between January 1 and February 24, officers conducted 1,381 traffic stops, issued 1,009 Summary Offence Tickets, and completed 128 proactive patrols. These numbers represent the highest enforcement levels observed in recent reporting periods. Speeding infractions made up 23% of the tickets issued in January while February saw that number rise to 32% of all tickets issued.

Administrative infractions, such as expired vehicle registration, expired safety inspection and no insurance accounted for approximately 40% of all tickets issued for both months.

“These numbers reflect the work our officers are doing every day to address unsafe driving and keep our roads safe,” says Cpl. Bobby Bambury of the RCMP HRD Traffic Unit. “Increased enforcement is a direct response to the behaviours we’re seeing on the roads, and is also guided in part by the reports we receive every day from the communities we serve. We’ll continue to be visible and proactive to reduce collisions and improve safety for everyone.”

Safe driving is a shared responsibility on roadways.

“Every day, our officers see the impact that speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving have on our communities,” says Cpl. Bambury. “These behaviours put lives at risk, including your own. We’re asking all motorists to slow down, stay focused, and make safe choices behind the wheel.”

RCMP charges Ontario man with trafficking a foreign national in Nova Scotia February 20, 2026, Church Point, Nova Scotia…

The RCMP Provincial Human Trafficking Unit has charged an Ontario man in connection with a labour-related human trafficking investigation in Church Point.

In July 2025, Digby RCMP Detachment received a report that a foreign national in Canada on a temporary status was being exploited for labour at a business in Digby County. The detachment engaged the RCMP Provincial Human Trafficking Unit, which led the investigation.

Officers determined that, over the course of a year, the victim worked excessive hours. During that time, he received a total of $300 in financial compensation, was coerced into performing additional duties, and was threatened.

Following the investigation, officers arrested 65‑year‑old Trevor Anthony Annon of southern Ontario. He’s been charged with the following offences:

  • Trafficking in Persons
  • Receive Financial or Material Benefit
  • False Pretense
  • Extortion

Annon has also been charged with Fraud Under $5,000 in relation to another victim.

He was remanded into custody and appeared in Digby Provincial Court on February 19.

“The investigative team wants to acknowledge the support the YMCA’s Migrant Worker Awareness Partnership Project offers victims,” says Sgt. Jeff MacFarlane of the RCMP’s Provincial Human Trafficking Unit. “Partnerships with community groups across the province are critical to the success of human trafficking investigations, and the YMCA was particularly valuable in this case.”

Anyone who believes they may be experiencing forced labour, or who has concerns about someone else, can contact their local police or call or text the Nova Scotia Human Trafficking Hotline at 902‑449‑2425 for victim-centred, confidential support. Workers don’t need to be certain that trafficking is occurring before reaching out, and they can speak with police at any time without needing to decide immediately whether to participate in the full investigative or court process.

Newcomers disproportionately affected by labour trafficking in Nova Scotia February 20, 2026, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia…

The Nova Scotia RCMP is warning that labour trafficking is an emerging and under‑reported issue in the province, as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day approaches on February 22.

Investigators have identified cases where people were deceived or coerced into working in conditions far different from what they were promised, with newcomers among those most affected.

“Our mix of industries and seasonal employment can create conditions where people are more vulnerable to exploitation,” says Sgt. Jeff MacFarlane. “For some individuals, language barriers, transportation issues, or concerns about their job or immigration status can make it difficult to ask for help.”

Traffickers may exploit these vulnerabilities by lying about pay or duties, using threats, withholding passports and other documentation, creating false debts, or restricting movement.

Temporary workers can face added risks because they may be isolated, unfamiliar with Canadian labour standards, or limited by the terms of their work permits.

“All workers in Canada are protected under law,” says Sgt. MacFarlane. “Employers can’t threaten deportation or interfere with a person’s legal status, and every worker deserves safety and fair treatment. Employers, community organizations, service providers, and neighbours are essential partners in identifying exploitation and helping people access support.”

Signs that someone is being trafficked for labour can include:

  • workers being transported to and from job sites in groups with little freedom of movement
  • individuals living in overcrowded or employer‑controlled housing
  • workers who appear fearful, withdrawn, or unable to speak freely
  • people working excessive or unusual hours without breaks

Anyone who believes they may be experiencing labour trafficking, or who has concerns about someone else, can call or text the Nova Scotia Human Trafficking Hotline at 902‑449‑2425 for victim-centred, confidential support. Workers don’t need to be certain that trafficking is occurring before reaching out, and they can speak with police at any time without needing to decide immediately whether to participate in the full investigative or court process.

RCMP warning of counterfeit $50s appearing in Nova Scotia February 3, 2026, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia…

The Nova Scotia RCMP’s Commercial Crime Section is warning the public about an increase in counterfeit $50 Canadian bank notes being circulated throughout the province.

In the past month, the Nova Scotia RCMP has received at least eight separate reports of high-quality counterfeit $50 bank notes being used to purchase goods and services in the counties of Colchester, East Hants, West Hants, Kings, and Lunenburg.

These notes, which all have identical serial numbers, are made from a similar plastic to that used by genuine currency, and include a holographic sticker meant to imitate genuine embedded security measures. The holographic stripe on the one side can be peeled off.

“In Canada, it’s an offence to knowingly use or possess counterfeit money,” says Cpl. Mitch Thompson of the Commercial Crime Section. “And if you unknowingly accept counterfeit cash as legal tender, you can’t be reimbursed; you’re on the hook for the loss. Being familiar with the security features of genuine bank notes will help you spot counterfeits at a glance, protecting yourself from fraud.”

If accepting cash, Nova Scotians are encouraged to check the bank notes to ensure they’re proper legal tender. Resources on how to verify a bank note’s security features can be found on the Bank of Canada’s website: www.bankofcanada.ca/banknotes/counterfeit-prevention.

Nova Scotians are encouraged to contact their nearest RCMP detachment or local police to report crime, including the exchange of counterfeit currency, in their communities. Anonymous tips can be made by calling Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers, toll-free, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submitting a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or using the P3 Tips app.

Kings District RCMP seizes cannabis from illegal cannabis storefront February 3, 2026, Welton Landing, Nova Scotia…

Kings District RCMP, with support from the Kings District RCMP General Investigative Section, conducted an inspection under the Nova Scotia Cannabis Control Act at an illegal cannabis storefront in Welton Landing.

On January 30, RCMP officers attended an illegal cannabis storefront in the 3100 block of Hwy. 12. During an inspection of the premises, officers seized a quantity of illegal cannabis in various forms, including 385 packages of edible cannabis.

A man present at the establishment was charged under section 20(1)(a) of the Cannabis Control Act for operating a store selling cannabis without authorization.

“During the inspection, officers were met with crude language, persistent swearing and racist commentary,” says Supt. Jason Popik, District Policing Officer, Southwest Nova District RCMP. “We’re mandated to enforce provincial and federal laws that apply to the sale of cannabis, which our officers were doing. This behaviour reflects some of the conduct officers encounter while doing their jobs in our communities. I commend the team on their professionalism and persistence in stopping the illegal cannabis market.”

The investigation is ongoing.

The Nova Scotia RCMP reminds residents that only licensed retailers can legally sell cannabis in the province. Products from illegal storefronts are unregulated and may pose health risks. The RCMP continues to enforce cannabis laws with a focus on public safety. Anyone with information about illegal drug activity is encouraged to contact their local police or Crime Stoppers.
